ONCE HALI WAS IN HER PAJAMAS, TUCKED IN at his side with the ice pack on her hip and her head on his shoulder, Gray started searching.

“I found the birth certificates,” he said. “The father is listed as unknown.”

“Crap.” Hali made a face. “I was hoping it would be easier than that.”

“I can send Rusty over to talk to the mother again tomorrow. He can schmooze information out of anybody. She might be more willing to talk to him when she realizes he’s not a cop.”

“Do you think finding the father is important?”

“I think it can’t possibly hurt and very well may be important.”

“Then I guess that’s what we have to do.”

Gray brushed his lips over her forehead before he started typing again. “As for Cammie, I don’t think she’s going by the last name Brennan any longer. She seems to have fallen off the map.”

“When?”

“Weirdly enough, it was right around the time that Seth Rochester was killed. Cammie Brennan just stopped existing.”

“Don’t you have to file paperwork to change your name?”

“Legally, yes. I don’t think this was legal, though. I think she likely just changed her last name.”

“But … don’t you need a Social Security number to be paid and stuff?”

“Again, legally. It’s possible she’s being paid off the books.”

Hali took a moment to think about it. “She would have to be pretty scared to go that route, right? You’re not going to see a lot of upward momentum in cash only jobs.”

“No, you are not,” Gray agreed. “She must have seen something that scared her.”

“So, either she killed the boyfriend and framed her sister, or she saw someone else do it and is afraid for her life,” Hali surmised. “We’re going to have to make her feel safe when we find her.”

“If she’s a killer, she’ll see us as marks,” Gray countered. “Also, she might have the same abilities as her sister. We need to be careful.”

“Yeah.” Hali tightened her grip on Gray’s arm. “We have family breakfast tomorrow. I would suggest getting out of it, but you’ve met my parents. It will be a big deal if we skip.”

“It’s okay,” Gray said. “We can do family breakfast. After that, I have some contacts I can tap in Tampa to help find Cammie. I don’t know if they’ll be able to come through—it’s a long shot—but there’s no harm in trying.”

“Okay.” Hali angled her head so her mouth touched his stubbled cheek. “I wasn’t suggesting that you go to your brother’s place because I don’t want you around,” she said. “I need you to know that.”

“I do know that. You’re afraid for me. I’m afraid for me too. My fear for you outweighs my fear for myself, though.”

“See, my fear for you outweighs my fear for myself.”

“We’re quite the pair.” He slid his arm around her back and tugged her tight. “We’ll be careful.”

“A lot more careful than we were tonight.”

“That goes without saying. Angela is a threat, but if she’s telling the truth, she’s not the sort of threat that is going to try to kill us.
